At Swallownest Primary School, from Year 2 onwards, reading is delivered through Pathways to Read: a structured reading program designed to enhance reading skills in primary school students, focusing on fluency and comprehension through a mastery approach.

 

Pathways to Read is a comprehensive reading program that supports primary school students in developing essential reading skills through structured lessons, high-quality texts, and a focus on mastery learning. It aims to create confident, fluent readers who enjoy reading for pleasure and understanding.

 

Programme Structure

 

Target Audience: The program is designed for pupils from Year 1 to Year 6, equipping them with essential reading skills to become competent and fluent readers.

Curriculum Alignment: Pathways to Read aligns with the national curriculum, ensuring comprehensive coverage of reading comprehension and vocabulary development.

 

Teaching Approach

 

Mastery Learning: The program follows a mastery approach, dividing reading skills into ongoing, core, and mastery skills. Each unit consists of six whole class reading sessions that focus on prediction, vocabulary development, and retrieval.

Engaging Lessons: Lessons are designed to be engaging and purposeful, utilising high quality texts to foster a love for reading. The program encourages discussions and fluency practice, allowing students to enhance their vocabulary and comprehension skills.
